“Chanel pearls at Estate Jewels, well, you know: I knew it was mine.”

LUX LOTUS

ON PORTRAITS

Lately I’ve been fascinated by Gerald and Sara Murphy, the iconic Jazz Age ex-pats who set the standard for Americans in the South of France, and frankly, anyone and anywhere they went. He was the heir to the storied leather-goods manufacturer Mark Cross, she was richer and had parents who objected to a suitor “in trade.” She was 32 when they married, and five or six years older than he. Delightfully mis-, or perfectly, depending on how you look at it –matched, off they went to France, in pursuit of a more favorable exchange rate and number of miles from their perturbed families.

Known for an innate and fully comprehensive elan, the couple was widely sought after and said to have influenced more than one portrait by admiring members of their circle, most famously Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night and, more loosely, Hemingway’sGarden of Eden. Many sketches of them exist in that sense –– Calvin Trillin’s 1962 profile in the New Yorker is exemplary, as is Peter Schjeldahl’s review of a contemporary show on their “art & style” –– but photographs are extremely hard to come by.

Descriptions will have to do, and the one that is most oft-employed in Sarah’s case is a particular habit she had of wearing her very precious pearls casually slung over a shoulder as she walked down to the beach at Antibes. Naturally, when I made plans to spend a few days of much-desired relaxation on the beach in sunny Southern California next month, then immediately came across a twenty-year old, sixty-four inch strand of Chanel pearls at Estate Jewels, well, you know: I knew it was mine.

Style Notes: Treasure Hunting by Les Nouvelles

I took a little field trip to Fort Greene over the weekend to explore the Brooklyn Flea Market. It’s been on my to do list for ages, but there always seems to be a great excuse not to get on the subway and venture deep into Brooklyn on a chilly New York winter weekend. Well, that was a big mistake. Huge! My wardrobe is weeping over the all the vintage treasures that could have accumulated from weekly visits to the BFM.

Too cold to be held outdoors, the winter flea market is housed in a 20th century Beaux-Arts bank with sprawling ceilings and the most glorious gilded architecture – it’s like a mini Grand Central. And it’s brimming with all sorts of interesting vendors selling fabulous vintage clothing,  costume jewelry, art and all sorts of trinkets. Here were a few of my favorites:

Estate Jewels by George & Raf - A glorious collection of vintage costume jewels from Valentino, Givenchy, Dior and Chanel. Strands and strands of colorful beads and statement clip-ons were scattered on his tables.

Species by the Thousands - Interesting collection of Pamela Love-esque jewelry. Dark and romantic pieces.

ASIS - Local Brooklyn designer with very well-priced accessories such as yarn wrapped chain link cuffs for $24!!

NYC’s best secret shops: There are spoils to be had at these covert stores for those in the know

Time Out New York has always been good to us, and here we are in their Holiday weekend edition listed as one of NYC’s best secret shops. The secret is out and please let all of your friends know.

Estate Jewels by George & RafOwners George Yzquierdo and Rafael Medrano opened this glitzy showroom in June 2011 to showcase their collection of costume jewelry that spans nearly 150 years of American and European design. Decked out with bejeweled mannequins, wrought-iron furniture and vintage button–upholstered armchairs, the space is as elaborate as the gems it holds. Book an appointment (e-mail info@estatejewelsbygr.com) and the duo will pull more than 100 pieces for you to browse during a complimentary styling session. Be prepared to drool over statement pieces such as an ’80s Valentino structured collar necklace ($145), a ’50s sapphire rhinestone bracelet ($60) and a showstopping ’50s Juliana multicolored necklace-and-earrings set ($1,050). You can even check yourself out in four mirrors equipped with different lighting to see how your jewels will glimmer on the red carpet, at a candlelit dinner, in an office or at home. Feel like an old Hollywood starlet in a ’60s Lisner resin earrings, necklace and bracelet set ($145); or a ’60s Napier grape-cluster ring ($95).111 Lafayette Ave at South Oxford St, Fort Greene, Brooklyn (917-903-0484,estatejewelsbygr.com).
